What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a system for teeth straightening without braces. Rather than metal or ceramic brackets and wires, Invisalign consists of flexible plastic trays. Invisalign can be a good alternative to braces if you have a mild-to-moderate problem with any of the following:

  • Gaps between your teeth
  • Overbite, where your top teeth close over your bottom ones
  • Underbite, where your bottom teeth close over your top ones
  • Open bite, where top and bottom teeth don’t touch
  • Crossbite, where top and bottom teeth are misaligned
  • Crowded mouth, where there’s too little room for all of your teeth in your mouth

If you’re looking for a subtle way to straighten your teeth, Invisalign may be the solution.

Am I a good candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign can be a good choice for teens (Invisalign Teen) or adults, but it won’t work for everyone.

A good Invisalign candidate has a fully-developed mouth and jaw, which is why it’s limited to teens and adults. Before adolescence, the mouth and jaw aren’t completely developed yet, which means treatment with Invisalign might not be effective. However, other types of orthodontics may help even when the mouth and jaw aren’t fully developed.

If you have severe orthodontic issues, then braces or other orthodontics are typically more effective than Invisalign.

Another important thing to consider with candidacy is whether you’ve got the time and dedication to wearing Invisalign daily as directed. Generally, this means wearing Invisalign around 22 hours a day, removing it only to eat and brush. If you think you’d have trouble remembering to replace the aligners after eating or brushing, it might not be the right option for you.

How long does it take to straighten teeth with Invisalign?

The length of time that you’ll need to wear Invisalign depends on your specific situation. Most adult patients wear Invisalign for a period of around 12 months. With teens, the treatment time can vary considerably, but usually isn’t longer than 18 months. You’ll use new aligners every 1-2 weeks during treatment.

How often do I need to see the orthodontist during treatment?

During your Invisalign treatment, you’ll see Dr. Spector around once every 4-6 weeks. During your Invisalign checkups, he makes sure that your teeth are moving into position properly, and can make any necessary adjustments to your Invisalign aligners.
