Clear Braces Q & A

What are my options for clear braces?

You have a couple of options for clear teeth straightening today. Invisalign®, sometimes known as clear braces, isn’t technically braces. It’s a teeth-straightening system that uses clear plastic aligners that shift your teeth gradually.

Your other option for clear braces is ceramic braces. Ceramic braces have clear brackets instead of traditional metal brackets. The wires may be traditional silver, but can also be tooth-colored so they’ll blend in better.

How does Invisalign work?

The Invisalign aligners are removable, but you wear them for around 20-22 hours a day. You’ll change aligners every 1-2 weeks, wearing a fresh set each time, until your treatment is complete. You’ll see Dr. Spector once every 4-6 weeks or so for an Invisalign checkup.

Because the Invisalign trays are totally clear and also quite thin, it can be a great way to straighten your teeth without being obvious about it. Invisalign treatment for adults lasts around 12 months on average, while it can vary with teens.

How do ceramic braces work?

Ceramic braces work very much like regular metal ones do. They include clear brackets, silver or clear wires, and clear elastics to connect the brackets and wires.

Once Dr. Spector places ceramic braces on your teeth, you’ll have checkups around once every 4-6 weeks. During those appointments, he tightens or otherwise adjusts your braces as needed.

If you experience a broken bracket or wire, you need to come in for a repair promptly to keep your teeth straightening on track. You may need to wear ceramic braces for anywhere from 1-3 years.

Am I a good candidate for clear braces?

If your main concern about braces is the “metal mouth,” clear braces might be the perfect answer. With both Invisalign and ceramic braces, you get all the teeth-straightening benefits without having to wear prominent metal brackets for a of couple years.

Many teens and adults feel self-conscious about their appearance, and don’t want to feel even more self-conscious with metal braces. If this sounds like you, schedule a clear braces consultation at Millennium Park Orthodontics to discuss your case with Dr. Spector.
