Getting your teeth straightened as an adult is a very different experience than it is as a young person. Adults may need more specialized care, and you may also need to wear braces for longer than a young person would. Because of these things, adult braces require a highly knowledgeable orthodontist like Howard Spector, DDS, at Millennium Park Orthodontics in Chicago. Book your adult braces consultation online or by phone today.
Not at all! Many adults get braces to straighten their teeth today, and in fact, over half of the patients at Millennium Park Orthodontics are adults. Dr. Spector and his team can help you get straighter teeth whether you’re a young adult or a super senior.
You have several different options for adult braces, including all of the following.
Invisalign consists of clear aligner trays that snap snugly onto your teeth, which means they’re nearly invisible. The aligners move your teeth gradually, and you swap aligners every 1-2 weeks. Invisalign takes around one year in adults.
Traditional metal braces include metal brackets and wires. You’ll see Dr. Spector for checkups around once every six weeks. Most adults wear braces for 18 months to three years.
Ceramic braces include transparent ceramic brackets and metal wires. Sometimes wires are white, so they’re less obvious on your teeth. As with traditional braces, you’ll see Dr. Spector for checkups around once every six weeks, and average wear time is 18 months to three years.
Lingual braces go on the back of your teeth, leaving the front of your teeth totally metal free. As with other types of braces for adults, 18 months to three years is the average duration of treatment. However, sometimes lingual braces may take longer than other kinds of braces.
To determine which kind of braces are right for you, Dr. Spector reviews your orthodontic issues. You can ask questions and discuss your specific concerns, then you and Dr.Spector can decide whether Invisalign, lingual, or ceramic braces are the best choice.
As an adult, your jaw and mouth are fully developed. It’s more challenging to shift bone that’s already well-entrenched. When you straighten teeth as a tween, the still-developing bones shift more easily, so this may lead to shorter treatment times overall.
Although it may take a little longer to straighten your teeth as an adult, the benefits are so well worth it. A straighter smile, and the confidence to show it to the world can be yours with adult braces.
