How We Use Digital Imaging

In years past, going to the orthodontist to plan a course of treatment was not the most pleasant experience. To get an accurate picture of the state of your teeth, the orthodontist would put a tray of putty-type material in your mouth for a couple of minutes to allow the gooey material to set around your teeth, creating impressions of your teeth they could then study.

The process was uncomfortable and messy, and no one enjoyed it.

With today’s digital technology, though, the days of goopy impressions are gone. At Millennium Park Orthodontics in Chicago, Howard Spector, DDS, and our expert team use digital imaging to build a road map to guide our treatment plans. Here’s how we do it.

The basics of digital imaging for your teeth

First, Dr. Spector performs an oral exam of your mouth to determine what scans will be needed to plan your treatment. Once decided, he may perform a digital X-ray to get a more in-depth look at the layout of your mouth, including the roots of your teeth and your jaw structure.

Dr. Spector may also perform a digital inner-mouth scan. For this scan, he uses a handheld wand that scans the inside of your mouth, and it takes just a few minutes.

There’s no mess and no fuss, and the images captured by the wand are immediately stitched together to produce a digital 3-D model that shows a precise map of your mouth.

Crafting a treatment plan for your new smile

Once your scans are complete, Dr. Spector will spend a few minutes examining the results. He’ll then explain his diagnosis to you and walk you through his recommended treatment plan.

Details will include the length and cost of the treatment, the results expected, and more. If there are several treatment options available, he’ll explain the pros and cons of each one and help you come to a final decision.

Digital imaging is vital to this process, especially if you’ve had previous oral health issues. The digital models allow Dr. Spector to accurately predict what will happen as he moves your teeth.

They also provide more precise measurements on tooth size and spacing, and this will help Dr. Spector craft a more accurate treatment plan, whether it will be for braces, aligner trays, or retainers.
